This section offers a guide to the archival materials that bear witness to the “radical disconnect” between external representations and internal lived experiences. We examine how the nineteenth-century “ethnographic gaze” sought to classify and document the Gitano community, often through the “lens” of colonial ideology. By engaging with digital repositories such as the Biblioteca Nacional de España, we explore how researchers can find the “negative space” in the historical record—the moments where practitioners navigated, and sometimes subverted, the archival and state apparatuses that sought to define them.
